Private Clifton was a member of the 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded while fighting the enemy in South Korea on 26 March 1951 and died of those wounds on 2 April 1951.

Clifton was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
