Private First Class Bruinsma was a member of the 512th Military Police Company, 40th Infantry Division. He died of other causes on 27 June 1952 near Pusan, South Korea.

Bruinsma was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
