Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate Bedford was a crew member aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte (CV-32) being refitted at the Boston Navy Yard. He was killed by an explosion and fire in the port catapult machinery room aboard ship on 16 October 1953.

Bedford was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
