Master Sergeant Montgomery was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Headquarters Company, 522nd Engineer Base Depot, U.S. Army. On 20 November 1951, he was struck by a train in a depot near Pusan, South Korea.

Montgomery was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
