Corporal Bangs was a member of Company B, 728th Military Police Battalion, U.S. Army. On 11 September 1951, he was involved in a truck accident at Inchon, Korea, that killed him.

Bangs was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
