Sergeant First Class Jones was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 8th Air Force and taken Prisoner of War for thirteen months. In Korea, he was a member of the 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy near Kunu-ri, North Korea, on 30 November 1950 and died while a prisoner of malnutrition on 30 June 1951.

Jones was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
