Major Haskell was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter with Marine Fighter Squadron 312, Marine Air Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On 2 October 1952, while on a combat mission, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, crashed into the Yellow Sea one mile south of Hachwira-do, North Korea.
Haskell was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
