Second Lieutenant Helbing was a pilot of a F-86 Sabrejet Fighter Bomber assigned to Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, New York. His aircraft crashed in dense woods 30 miles southwest of Lowville, New York, on 13 September 1950.

Helbing was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
