Private First Class Burke was a member of the 5th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company, U.S. Army. On 23 July 1950, he drowned while swimming in the Kumho Gan River near Taegu, South Korea, when the river pulled him under water.

Burke was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
