Major Miles was a member of Headquarters Squadron, 1st Marine Air Wing. On 29 May 1952 he was a crew member of a TBM-3 aircraft that crashed 20 miles of Sanju, South Korea, killing three crew members.
For his leadership and valor, Major Miles was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
