Private First Class Stankovic was a member of Headquarters Battery, 623rd Field Artillery Battalion, U.S. Army. He was injured in a vehicular accident and was taken to the 11th Evacuation Hospital in Seoul, South Korea where he died on 6 June 1952.

Stankovic was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
