Captain McLaughlin was a crew member of a RB-50 Super Fortress reconnaissance aircraft with the U.S. Air Force. On 10 September 1956, while patrolling the airspace during the Korean truce, his aircraft was lost over the Sea of Japan due in part to Typhoon Emma.

McLaughlin was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Defense Service Medal.
