Sergeant McAfee was the tail gunner of a B-26B Invader bomber with the 730th Bomber Squadron, 452nd Bomber Wing. On 16 February 1951, while on a night intruder mission, the aircraft caught fire and the crew bailed out. His remains were recovered.

McAfee was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
