Corporal Johnson was a member of the 22nd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squad, U.S. Army. On 28 May 1952, near Ascom, South Korea, he was demolishing ammunition when a round accidentally exploded nearby killing him.

Johnson was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
