Gunner's Mate Third Class Peterson was a crew member of the attack transport USS Pasig (AW3). On 19 August 1953, he was working on the ship's port 40mm gun, when he was crushed between the gun barrel and the splinter shield.

Peterson was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
