Sergeant Gonsouland was a member of the 514th Transportation Truck Company, U.S. Army. On 2 October 1952, he was sleeping on the ground of a parking area near Pammol, North Korea, when a truck accidentally backed over him.

Gonsouland was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
