David Brian Dann

David Brian Dann was born on 26 March 1941 in Milwaukee, WI. He was the son of Leslie George and Audrey J. (Schroeder) Dann.

David was a 1959 graduate of Custer High School in Milwaukee, WI, where he was on the cross-country track, football, and baseball teams. He went on to become a City of Milwaukee Police Officer on 25 February 1963.

Military Service

He took leave of the police force on 14 May 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He won an outstanding training award in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, in August 1964. He completed military police school at Fort Gordon, GA, in November 1964. In October 1965, he was a distinguished graduate (third) in his class at the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA, where he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant.

Dann's tour of duty in Vietnam began on 10 October 1966 with the 28th Infantry Black Lions (Co C 1/28). On 8 November 1966, he was serving in Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam, when he was killed by hostile, small arms fire. His Silver Star Medal citation states that "throughout many close combat enemy attacks against numerically superior hostile forces and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, he unhesitatingly remained in an exposed position from which he could control his troops and direct their fire. He was mortally wounded in one of those attacks."

Death and Burial

First Lieutenant David Brian Dann was killed in action on 8 November 1966. He is buried at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, Waukesha County, WI, in Section 18, Lot 104, Grave 1.

Dann was 25 years old and unmarried. He was survived by his father and mother, Leslie and Audrey Dann; an older brother, Douglas, and two younger brothers, Russell and Neil.
