Sergeant De Brake was serving with the Army of Occupation in Germany. On 9 September 1951, his automobile crashed into a barricade in the Soviet Zone of East Berlin and an East German policeman shot him to death.

De Brake was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany).
