Private First Class Shipley was a member of the 82nd Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. He was seriously wounded while fighting the enemy in North Korea on 3 February 1951 and died of those wounds the following day.

Shipley was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
