Private First Class Shields was a member of Company A, 14th Engineer Combat Battalion. On 6 January 1952, while removing an anti-tank mine at CS299645, South Korea, it exploded killing him.

Shields was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
