Private First Class Reed was a member of Battery D, 3rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. On 18 February 1952, the vehicle in which he was riding overturned and rolled down an embankment near Chinpa-ri, North Korea.

Reed was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
