Corporal Mitchell was a member of Headquarters Company, 7th Medical Battalion, 7th Infantry Division. On 6 August 1951 near Mahyon-ni, North Korea, his vehicle went over a 15 foot ledge pinning him underneath.

Mitchell was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
