On 15 May 1968, Lance Corporal Riley David Raulston was serving with D Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, LCpl Raulston was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
