Lieutenant Commander Hutchinson was a crew member of a PB4Y-1P Consolidated Liberator surveillance aircraft with the U.S. Navy. On 22 August 1956, while patrolling the airspace during the Korean truce, his aircraft was shot down. His remains have not been recovered.

Lieutenant Commander Hutchinson was awarded the Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal.
