Private First Class Thomas was a member of Company A, 151st Engineer Combat Battalion, U.S. Army. On 1 April 1951, the truck he was riding in struck a train near Anyong, South Korea, overturned and killed him.

Thomas was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
