Private First Class Stewart was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On 2 September 1952, he was accidentally killed when a hand grenade exploded near Chorwon, North Korea.

Stewart was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
