Casanave Howle "Pete" Young, Jr.

Commander, U.S. Navy

Casanave Howle Young, Jr., was born on 23 September 1927, in Washington, DC, to Casanave Howle and Elizabeth Young. Known to his friends and family as Pete, he attended school in Philadelphia and Georgia before graduating from the Hill School in Pottstown, PA.

He attended Swarthmore College prior to gaining admittance into the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. Young loved his time at the Naval Academy and graduated in the Class of 1950 ready to join the fleet. His first assignment was in USS Ellyson (DMS-19), followed by tours in USS St Paul (CA-73) where he fought in the Korean War and participated in shooting the last round of that conflict, and USS Sagacity (MSO-469).

After a tour at the Naval Academy as a Physics Instructor, Young commanded the USS Shakori (ATF-162) from 1958-60. From 1960-63, Young attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, where he received a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He followed this with tours at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard, and the Bureau of Naval Ships in Washington, DC, before retiring as a Commander in 1970.

As a second career, Young taught high school math at Herndon High School in Herndon, VA.

Young enjoyed fishing, boating, golf, and spending time with his family. He was known for his warmth and sense of humor.

Commander Casanave Howle Young Jr., died on Sunday, 25 March 2012, from cancer. He was 84 years old.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen Cole Young, son Thomas, son Peter and daughter-in-law Maura, and three grandchildren, Caitlen Petschke, Carey Schuele, and Samuel.
