Biography:

Robert Scott Stone

Captain, U.S. Navy

Robert Scott Stone was born in Minneapolis, MN, on 23 August 1924, and spent his childhood there.

He began his Naval career in 1942 as a Seaman Apprentice in the NROTC program at the University of Minnesota before receiving his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1946 with the Class of 1947, as a member of Second Company. In 1946, he married the love of his life, Mikie (Irene Marudas), and then reported aboard the USS Valley Forge (CV-45).

After two years in the surface Navy, he became a Naval Aviator in 1949. His first tour was with Patrol Squadron 21, where he earned the designation of plane commander in both PB4Y2 and P4M-1 aircraft. Bob then reported to Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM, as a special weapons instructor and technical editor and writer. His next assignment was to Heavy Attack Squadron 5, flying the AJ-1 and AJ-2 aircraft. This was followed by a tour as Assistant Air Operations Officer on the USS Randolph (CVA-15).

Bob's next tour was with the Bureau of Naval Personnel as an Education Specialist where he determined and maintained curriculums and instructions in the Polaris Missile Program at civilian factories and at the Naval Guided Missile School. He then served as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of Air Antisubmarine Squadron 24, followed by Commander of the Antisubmarine Warfare Air Group 58. Bob's sea duty continued as Operations Officer and then Executive Officer on the USS Essex (CVS-9). Bob then reported for duty in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations as the Air Antisubmarine Warfare Systems Analyst, and earned his Master's degree in Systems Management at George Washington University.

His next assignment was to the Commander Antisubmarine Warfare Force, Sixth Fleet Staff, Naples, Italy, serving as Deputy Chief of Staff. His final tour of duty was as Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Facility in Naples, Italy.

After his Navy career retirement in 1976, he spent the next 13 years as an Operational Specialist on the Staff of Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet on programs for the improvement of Antisubmarine Warfare for the entire Navy.

Bob's greatest joys in retirement were spending time with his family, traveling the world with his beloved Mikie, cruising the high seas as a civilian, and playing golf and bridge with his best friends. Bob was a member of the Amphibious Base Protestant Chapel family, and a dedicated Lion where he served as the president for 10 years. He was a life member of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, the Association of Naval Aviation, the Military Officer's Association of America, the USS Valley Forge Association, the USS Intrepid Association, the VP-21 Association and the Norfolk Sports Club.

Captain Robert Scott Stone died on Monday, 15 November 2010, in Norfolk, VA. He was 86-years-old.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 57 wonderful years, Mikie, and a granddaughter. He is survived by his three children, Barbara S. Femrite, R. Scott Stone Jr., and Patrick M. Stone; two sisters; as well as five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

His memory will live on in the lives of his family who will always smile when they sing the camp songs of Bob's childhood to their children and grandchildren.
