Richard Edward Potter was born on 14 January 1948.

On 26 May 1967, Private First Class Richard Edward Potter was serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Fontaine was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
