Robert John Podnar was born on 15 March 1942.

On 5 June 1970, Specialist Four Robert John Podnar was serving with 514th Quartermaster Company, 240th Quartermaster Battalion, Army Support Command Qui Nhon, 1st Logistical Command, in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SP4 Podnar was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
