Robert Jeffrey "Jeff" Niss
Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy
Robert Jeffrey "Jeff" Niss was born in 1941 and raised in Queens and Eastchester, NY. He graduated from Eastchester High School in 1959 and from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1963. He later completed a Master's Degree in Business Administration at NYU.
He was an officer aboard the destroyer USS Turner Joy when it, along with the destroyer USS Maddox, was attacked twice in what became known as the "Tonkin Gulf Incident."
He was Executive Officer, USS Frigate Bird, and held a Master's degree in Operations Analysis from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School. He returned to Vietnam a third time on the staff of Admiral Elmo Zumwalt. He left the Navy in 1971 as a Lieutenant Commander.
Jeff returned to Bronxville and began a 35-year career in the financial services industry. He was with Smith Barney from 1971-91, where he served as a Managing Director. In 1992, the family relocated to Pittsburgh, PA, where he became President of the Shareholder Services Company, a subsidiary of Federated Investors.
Lieutenant Commander Robert Jeffrey Niss, 69, of Sewickley, PA, died peacefully at home with his family at his side on 26 January 2011.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Millie Holland of Sewickley; four children: Nancy Elizabeth (Jerry) Giganti of Damascus, MD; Corrie K. Holland of Amherst, OH; Bradley M. Niss and Kyla L. Niss of Sewickley; two brothers, Steven D. (Teresa) Niss of Westport, CT; and Michael A. (Barbara) Niss of Rye, NY; and two grandchildren, Fara G. Giganti and Christopher Jeffrey Giganti.
Burial
Lieutenant Commander Niss is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD.
