On 5 June 1968, Corporal Thomas Joseph Morrissey, Jr., was serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, CPL Morrissey was killed in action when he sustained wounds from artillery, rocket, or mortar fire. His body was recovered.
