John Lee Moreland was born on 16 July 1947.

On 8 August 1967, Lance Corporal John Lee Moreland was serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, LCPL Moreland was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
