On 22 May 1966, Private First Class Gerald Ernest Metcalf was serving with B Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Metcalf was killed in action in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
