Joe Roger Melczek was born on 11 February 1947.

On 16 April 1968, Lance Corporal Joe Roger Melczek was serving with K Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, LCPL Melczek was killed in action when he sustained wounds from artillery, rocket or mortar fire. His body was recovered.
