Brian Richard McNew was born on 10 February 1947.

On 18 May 1969, Specialist Four Brian Richard McNew was serving with B Battery, 8th Battalion, 6th Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SP4 McNew was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
