On 24 October 1967, Second Lieutenant James Joseph Mallon, Jr., was serving with 1st Platoon, F Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, 2LT Mallon was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
