John Reily Love

Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps

John Reily Love was born on 15 October 1929, in Memphis, TN. He grew up in Arizona and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1951. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Second Lieutenant Love was assigned to the Marine Officers Basic School, Quantico, VA, prior to deployment to Korea. He participated in the 1952 Korean Spring and Summer Campaigns. He was then stationed at the Marine Barracks, Washington, DC, and promoted to First Lieutenant in 1952 and to Captain in 1954.

Returning to Quantico in 1958, Captain Love met and married Captain Beverly Schofield. He entered the Amphibious Warfare School as a student in 1961 and was promoted to Major in 1962. In 1965, he was selected to serve as Aide-de-Camp to the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps in Washington, DC, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1966.

In 1967, Lt. Col. Love was ordered to Vietnam where he commanded the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines until 1968 when he was assigned as Executive Officer of that Regiment. In 1971, he transferred to Camp Pendleton, CA, as the Commanding Officer, Headquarters Battalion, where he was promoted to Colonel in 1972. In 1977, he was ordered to the Army War College, Carlisle, PA, as the Marine Corps Representative and faculty member where he remained until his retirement in 1981.

Upon retirement, Colonel Love settled in Portsmouth. He was Operations Manager for the Vinnell Corporation in Saudi Arabia until 1985 and then devoted his time to serving as an Adjunct Faculty Professor for four New England colleges. He moved to Carlsbad, CA, in 1995.

Colonel John Reily Love died on 5 March 2010.

He is survived by daughter, Kristin; son, Scott; granddaughter, Melanie, all of Seattle, WA, and his companion, Marjorie Peterson of Carlsbad, CA.
