On 27 February 1969, Specialist Four James Terry Liebnitz was serving with I Company, 75th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SP4 Liebnitz was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
