Private First Class Stanphill was a member of the 145th Field Artillery Battalion. He was Wounded in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on 10 June 1952 and evacuated to the United States where he died on 21 June 1952.

Stanphill was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
