Lieutenant Shropshire was the flight surgeon aboard the aircraft carrier USS Boxer (CV-21). He was killed attempting to rescue two men trapped in his office after a fire and explosion aboard the ship in Korean waters on 6 August 1952.

Shropshire was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
