On 31 March 1969, Sergeant Edward Bartholomew Lama was serving with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, in Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SGT Lama was killed in action after sustaining wounds from small arms fire during a combat operation. His body was recovered.
