On 23 August 1968, Private First Class Joel Mitchell La Roche was serving with A Company, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade, AMERICAL Division, in Quang Tin Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC La Roche was killed in action when he sustained multiple fragmentation wounds. His body was recovered.
