On 1 June 1969, Sergeant Ray Edward Knoll was serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SGT Knoll was killed in action; detail of the casualty was not provided. His body was recovered.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Ray Edward Knoll (ASN: 16942044), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity In action against the enemy while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam, on or about 1 June 1969. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
