On 27 December 1966, Private First Class Richard A. Knaus was serving with B Battery, 2nd Battalion, 19th Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division, in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Knaus was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
