Biography:

Sgt. Glen Swartz, 19, was assigned to the 779th Bomber Squadron of the 464th Bomber Group (Heavy), 15th Air Force, based at Panatella Field in Italy. This squadron flew the B-24 “Liberator” aircraft. He was the tail gunner on the B-24 "Black H" (AC #42-50736) on 17 OCT 44. Upon returning from a mission bombing the South Ordnance Depot at Vienna, Austria, the aircraft's pilot reported trouble getting the gear down because the hydraulics had been shot out. According to an eye-witness, upon approach to landing the plane rolled over and dived into the ground. There were no survivors. Sgt. Swartz was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart and was buried at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery located at Nettuno, Italy.
