Leo Loyd Harper, Jr. In December 1944, Staff Sergeant Leo Loyd Harper, Jr. was serving as a radio operator with the 759th Bomb Squadron, 459th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 304th Bombardment Wing, 15th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Forces, based at Giulia Airfield, Italy. The 459th Bombardment Group flew B-24 Liberator bombers on missions in Italy, France, the Balkans, Austria and Germany. On 18 December, SSGT Harper was the radio operator on B-24H Liberator bomber Serial Number 42-95265 named ’Frisco Kid alias The Whip’ that was on a mission to bomb a target at Oświęcim, Poland. [Missing Air Crew Record (MACR) 10685.] The aircraft had a crew of 10. MACR 10685 says the aircraft was last sighted by a witness at 1500 hours. The witness, 1LT William F. Bertrand, said he last saw the aircraft when it crashed into the Adriatic Sea north of Manfredonia, Italy. One parachute was seen to leave the plane. The body of Radio Operator Staff Sergeant Leo L. Harper, Jr. washed ashore at 2030 hours on 18 December 1944 and was the only body recovered. In was decided in June 1945 that all ten crew members were Killed in Action on 18 December 1944.
