Charles Robinson Hanes In September 1943, Private Charles Robinson Hanes was serving with the 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, Fifth U.S. Army in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. On 13 September, PVT Hane’s unit was in action against German forces near Paestum, Italy, in the Battle of Salerno during the Italian Campaign. PVT Hane’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day, at the cost of his life, earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross.
