Walter Scott West Private, U.S. Marine Corps Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Private Walter Scott West (13 March 1872 - 14 September 1943) was a U.S. Marine who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. Walter Scott West was born 13 March 1872 in Bradford, NH. After entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1897, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USS Marblehead. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Marine Corps Citation: On board the USS Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, West displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action. Death and Burial Private Walter Scott West died on 14 September 1943. He is buried at Rock Hill Cemetery in Foxboro, MA. |
