Bruno Wende Sergeant Major, U.S. Army Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Sergeant Major Bruno Wende (17 April 1859 - 27 December 1929) was a U.S. Army soldier who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. Bruno Wende was born on 17 April 1859 in Germany. After immigrating to the United States, he entered the Army from Canton, OH. He was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War with Company C, 17th U.S. Infantry where he earned the Medal of Honor for his actions. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Army, Company C, 17th U.S. Infantry Place and date: El Caney, Cuba, 1 July 1898 Citation: Gallantly assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the lines and under heavy fire from the enemy. Death and Burial Sergeant Major Bruno Wende died on 27 December 1929. He is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, OH, in Section 70, Space 1870. |
